Recent steps taken by the government to cut spending suggest that the US space agency is prioritizing some projects over others. The decision to cut funding for the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and the Mars Science Laboratory rover will have a significant impact on the development of these missions. They are scheduled to launch in 2008 and 2011, respectively. Since the US space agency is planning to send a new rover to Mars in 2011, funding for the Mars Science Laboratory mission is guaranteed. But the decision to cut the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter's funding is surprising. The LRO project is scheduled to launch in 2009. It will map the surface of the Moon at a resolution of 1 meter per pixel and will also produce stereoscopic images that will allow scientists to work out the internal structure of the Moon. The mission will also develop a new method of drilling into the Moon, with the aim of producing samples that can be used for scientific research. JPL's Gene Hunt, who is the project manager for the LRO mission, says the decision to cut funding is frustrating. "We will complete the science we've got planned for the project," he said. "We will keep the software and keep the hardware and be able to continue developing." But, he said, "it's kind of tricky because we've kind of crossed the line." The decision to fund the Mars Science Laboratory mission will allow engineers to continue with the development of the rover. But the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter project has already moved ahead to the point where testing hardware is going to start next year. The decision will be a disappointment for those who would have liked to see the LRO mission continue to develop. And it could affect the project's science mission, says Hunt. The most promising lunar targets are only accessible for a few days a year. "We would have liked to have seen [the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter] be able to do some more observations of the lunar nodes in the southern polar region," he said. In addition
